There was always the question of when, not if, Kobe Bryant would resign with the Lakers. Ever since 2007, it has been clear that this is his team. However, the first few seasons were not so great for Bryant. After feuding with former Laker center, Shaquille O'Neal, for eight seasons, the team traded him. While Kobe received his wish of being rid of Shaq, he found it hard to win without him.

In the first season of Kobe Bryant without Shaq, the Lakers posted one of their worst records in franchise history and they missed the playoffs. The next season, Kobe made history, scoring 81 points in a single game, good enough for the second-best game of all-time. Still, he could not get past the first round and the next season was a mirror image of the previous season.

After Kobe and the Lakers were bounced by Phoenix in the first round of the 2007 NBA Playoffs, Kobe Bryant publicly demanded to be traded. He said that the only way that he saw things getting better was for him to be traded.  Since they had already given up Shaq, the Lakers had no real intention of giving him up. Instead, they allowed his complaints to die down. By the start of the season, Bryant shifted his focus to winning. Just like in the previous season, the Lakers got off to a strong start. However, a midseason trade for Pau Gasol stopped them from having a major slip that would leave them almost out of playoff contention, like the previous season.

Instead, the Lakers maintained their position and ended up posting the best record in the West. In the playoffs, they would sweep the Nuggets, beat the Jazz in six, and manhandle the defending-champion Spurs in the Conference Finals. However, in the NBA Finals, the Boston Celtics' trio of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen was too much for Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, and Lamar Odom. The next season, the Lakers redeemed themselves and won the championship. Now, looking back at the demands from Kobe to be traded are simply absurd. Ever since 2007, there has been no question of Kobe Bryant returning to his team, after becoming the all-time leading scorer, this is where he wants to end it all.

There has been a lot of talk about this 2010 free agent class. The class consisted of Kobe Bryant and still consists of Amare Stoudemire, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Shaquille O'Neal, Joe Johnson, and Josh Howard. Of all of those players listed, it is said that the only player that is actually likely to leave their team is Bosh. This late in the career of Kobe Bryant, he would have no real reason for leaving. Before the end of the 2009-2010 season, Bryant has re-signed with the Lakers. Under the terms of this contract, which will not kick in until 2011, Kobe Bryant will remain in Los Angeles until 2014. Once that contract expires, Kobe Bryant will have put in eighteen seasons with the Lakers and only the Lakers. It is likely that he retires at the end of that contract.
