Polar opposites of the Hawks, the Los Angeles Lakers are picked as title contenders every year. Even when the Lakers struggled, a few years ago, the Hawks always practiced a little harder when they came to town. The recent success of Atlanta has not provided much shield when it comes to playing the Lakers. The Lakers have no true threat in the West for the first seed, but Kobe Bryant wants his team to keep the intensity up. Bryant is hoping that his team can solve their nasty habit of complacency. Playing in Atlanta, Kobe was sure that his team would finally shake that demon. What they did not expect was the largest crowd in the history of the Phillips' Arena, the Hawks' home court. Until two years ago, there had been nothing to cheer for in Atlanta for decades. Now that they have gone from being playoff contenders to possible title contenders, the entire city has shown up to support them.
From the beginning, Kobe Bryant came out and played hard, but his teammates did not show up. Being a one-man team, the Hawks beat up on the Lakers. They took an early double digit lead and they did not let go of it. Coming into the game, the Hawks knew that they had to treat this game as if it were a playoff game. Perhaps because of who they are, the Lakers felt that they could turn it on in the fourth quarter. Every time that the Lakers got back into the game, Johnson would hit a shot that would put Atlanta back up by a big margin. He had the task of also slowing Kobe Bryant down. One other reason that the Lakers could not turn it on was because of the brutal home crowd. Playing in front of a record road crowd, the Lakers were rattled from the start.
Unable to shift out of those obstacles, the Atlanta Hawks would defeat the Los Angeles Lakers 109-92. The victory was the largest margin of victory that the Hawks recorded over the Lakers since 1976. It had been 34 years since the Lakers lost by that wide of a margin to the Atlanta Hawks. That season was the first in which the Lakers had Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Despite his MVP season, he never found his flow with the team. That season remains one of the worst seasons in the recent history of the Los Angeles Lakers.
