This season, the Atlanta Hawks have been a pleasant surprise. No one expected them to be this good. With the top three teams in the East already decided as Orlando, Boston, and Cleveland, it was assumed that there would be a race for fourth. However, the Hawks have stepped up and turned this into a four-way battle. Unlike last season, Atlanta has a victory against every team in the top three and they are battling with Boston to become a top-three team.

The Hawks swept the season series with the Celtics, but Boston owns the tiebreaker because they lead their division. What stands in between Atlanta and leading their division is the Orlando Magic. So, what stands between the Hawks and the Conference Finals is the Orlando Magic. The Magic standing in the way of the Hawks has created a bit of friendly animosity. Because of who they are, Atlanta always turns things up against the Magic.

However, for most of last night's game, it did not appear that way. The Hawks were jumped from the start, with the Magic jumping out to a 15-2 lead. They would spend the entire first quarter chipping away at the lead. A strong second quarter would give the Hawks a lead going into halftime. In the third quarter, the Hawks maintained and they even built upon their lead. Going into the final quarter of the game, the Hawks led by six. In the fourth, the Hawks let their guard down and the Magic clawed their way back into the game. As the game came to a close, the score was tied. Atlanta held a three point lead, but a three-pointer from Vince Carter tied the game at 84.

With no timeouts left, the Hawks carried the ball up and they looked to Joe Johnson to close the game. He would attempt a fadeaway jumper that hit the rim and rolled off. It appeared as if the game would go into overtime until Josh Smith came seemingly out of nowhere and hit the game-winning dunk with .7 seconds left on the clock. The Hawks would record an 86-84 victory over the Magic and they clinched their third-straight playoff berth in the process.
