Throughout the season, the Dallas Mavericks have been an inconsistent team. Early in the season, they established themselves as the second-best team in the Western Conference following the Los Angeles Lakers, but midway through the season, they had fallen behind the Denver Nuggets and the Phoenix Suns for that second seed. They appeared to be settling into the fifth seed until their trade right before the deadline.

For the past few weeks, the talk of the NBA has not been the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Lakers, instead it has been this winning streak by the Dallas Mavericks. The run that they have put together has been quite impressive. Most importantly, they had regained the second seed in the West and they closed in on the Lakers. Coming into last night's home game against the Knicks, Dallas sat only two games behind the Lakers for the first seed in the Western Conference.

Having won thirteen games in a row and facing the New York Knicks, many predicted that the Mavs would improve to an NBA-best fourteen game winning streak. Back on January 24, 2010, the Mavs went into the home of the Knicks at Madison Square Garden and they won by 50 points. That loss was among the worst losses that the Knicks have received over the past few seasons. Everyone on the team felt that was rock bottom. While they have not drastically improved, the Knicks have not lost by 50 points since that game against the Mavericks. Last night, with their addition of Tracy McGrady, they saw a chance to avenge their loss at home to the Mavericks.

From the beginning, New York took over the game, leading by five after the first quarter. They would use that cushion and build upon it for the rest of the game. By halftime, the Knicks led by ten and after three quarters, they had the Mavericks down by 25. Fans of the Mavs waited for a rally that never came. A home crowd of over 22,000 showed up to watch Dallas lose by 34 points at home. This led to the home crowd booing the Mavericks, which had not happened since Mark Cuban took over the franchise. Several players from the Knicks admitted that they were inspired by their 50 point home loss, earlier this season. They said that they wished that the Knicks could have led by as many as 50 in the building. However, in the end, the Knicks still won, which would avenge the previous loss.
