Ever since their 2002 relocation to New Orleans, the Hornets have been searching for an identity. With most of the players protesting the move away from Charlotte, the early years of the New Orleans Hornets consisted of them unloading their roster. By 2004, the team had been overhauled and in 2005, they posted an 18-64 record.

That record tied for worst in the history of the franchise. But, because of their record, the Hornets were awarded the third overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft. Ironically enough, that pick would be used to draft North Carolina hero, Chris Paul. Glad to be out there, Paul gladly put on a Hornets jersey. He had grown up a fan of the Hornets and dreamed of playing for them. While he got that wish, it came in a new city and after Hurricane Katrina.

Chris Paul would never really receive the chance to play in the city of New Orleans. The city was in such bad shape that they temporarily relocated to Oklahoma City. While in Oklahoma City, he and the Hornets were accepted just as if the Hornets had always played for Oklahoma City. Because of the support of the city, Paul would go on to win the 2006 Rookie of the Year award and he led the team to a 20-game improvement. In the second season in Oklahoma City, Paul had another strong season, but the Hornets still missed the playoffs.

However, following the 2006-2007 season, the Hornets returned to New Orleans. Excited to finally be in his NBA home, Chris Paul put on an amazing show that lasted all season. Each home game was sold out, because the city of New Orleans needed something to cheer for. All of the strong play, along with the emergence of David West, led to the Hornets posting the second-best record in the West. The Hornets would only be one game shy of posting the top record in the West. Many expected the Hornets to go straight to the Western Conference Finals and challenge the Lakers to go to the NBA Finals. In the first-ever playoff appearance of his career, Paul had no trouble giving the Dallas Mavericks fits. Quickly, the Mavs would fall to the Hornets in five games.

Having a mixture of Chris Paul, Desmond Mason, and David West, many NBA analysts felt that the defending-champion San Antonio Spurs were out for the count. Throughout the season, they proved that their age was catching up to them. Plus, the Hornets featured their young counterparts. Tony Parker had never been as great as Chris Paul, Desmond Mason could easily outplay Manu Ginobili, and David West was considered the younger version of Tim Duncan. From the beginning, the Hornets overtook the Spurs and jumped out to a 2-0 series lead. But, the Spurs would win four of the next five games and the series. The next season would not be nearly as good to Chris Paul or his Hornets, as they would lose in five games to the Denver Nuggets, including an embarassing 122-66 loss at home. That loss was said to be the inspiration to the Hornets for this season, but injuries to Chris Paul have cost him this season.

Because of all of the games that he has missed, the New Orleans Hornets will not be in the 2010 NBA Playoffs. As close as they were, two years ago, Paul has come to terms with this. However, this will not stop him from playing to the best of his abilities from here on out. Finally healthy and during this season, he is not going to take anything for granted.
