In most rural areas, Carhartt is the attire most people considered "rednecks" choose to wear. Over the years, Carhartt has been stereotyped into being clothes for country white people. But, things were not always like this for the workman clothing line.
Long before the days of FUBU, Rocawear, and Sean John, rappers wore clothes that were already out. Carhartt was very popular among such groups as N.W.A. Dr. Dre, before he landed all of his endorsements, was frequently found wearing Carhartt. Even as he and Eazy-E traded disses, both of their camps wore the Carhartt products.

Fat Joe emerged during the summer of 1993 with his first hit single, "Flow Joe." In the video and in promotional photos, Joe was shown wearing the Carhartt products. But, the style did not catch on and Fat Joe was soon wearing the products of FUBU and Coogi, among others.
