As Sean "Diddy" Combs has made the transition from a hip hop entrepreneur to an international businessman, the makeup of his businesses have changed. His record label, Bad Boy Records, has moved from hardcore rap to pop records. Meanwhile, his 12 year old clothing line, Sean John, has gone from hip hop to sensual.

In 1998, Sean "Puffy" Combs created Sean John so the urban community could have a clothing line to call their own. At the time, there were not many clothing lines tailored to fit black people and there were no styles directed towards the urban community. Combs changed all of this with the launch of Sean John and a major marketing campaign was directed towards the hip hop community.

While Sean John was never as hip hop as FUBU or Phat Farm, the clothing line had its own niche and was the most popular. For most of the early 2000s, Sean John competed with Rocawear for the attention of the hip hop audience. But, after the opening of the flagship store in 2004, the focus of the clothing line began to change. The year of 2004 was transitional for Combs, then P. Diddy, as he began taking his business international.

Jay-Z has also made the rise from being a hip hop entrepreneur into international business, but he has kept his Rocawear brand for the urban community. Diddy, on the other hand, has continued to market Sean John as a hip hop clothing line, but the clothes appear to be suited for people outside of the urban community. The models who wear the clothes are hardly ever black, outside of Diddy, himself. While Sean John is still a great clothing line, is it fair to call it a hip hop clothing line?
