Last season, many people felt that the Boston Celtics were going to sweep through the season and win their second consecutive NBA championship. For half of the season, it appeared as if that would end up happening. The Celtics were on top of the league until February, when Kevin Garnett got injured. The Bulls were a young, energetic team led by rookie, Derrick Rose, who was determined to make some noise. No one denied how great of a player Rose was. But, no one thought that he could lead the Bulls to as much as a win against the Celtics. Never before in the history of the Chicago Bulls had they ever beaten the Boston Celtics in the playoffs. While Michael Jordan was great, he was never able to lead the Bulls to a win over that team.

Derrick Rose, however, was and he loved leading the Bulls to wins over the Celtics that he ended up doing so three times. No one expected Boston to struggle the way that they did. All of the hype placed upon Ray Allen disappeared as he was the one who had to guard Rose. The only good thing that came out of that series was the emergence of Rajon Rondo. In the time since that series, he has risen to become one of the top point guards in the NBA. Despite his strong play, this season the Boston Celtics have continued to fall apart and they can only win 51 games, at best.

While the Boston Celtics are slipping, the Chicago Bulls have not had the impact that they were expected to have when the season began. At times, the Bulls have played great, but they have had too many injuries to make a real run. As the NBA March Madness was just beginning, Derrick Rose received an injury and the Bulls would go on a 10-game losing streak. Things could have been worse for the Bulls, but the Toronto Raptors were able to lose enough games to keep the Bulls within contention. Since Rose has been back, he has had the Bulls on a tear.

Despite the pressure from Chris Bosh to do better, the Raptors have lost key games and the Bulls had a chance to get back into the playoff picture. Their win over the Raptors and the 39 points that Derrick Rose dropped on the Celtics drastically improved their chances. While the win was an important one for the Bulls, it was also a game that the Boston Celtics needed to win. Once Cleveland locked up the first seed and Orlando locked up the second seed, Boston felt that they could coast to the third seed. They were neck-in-neck with the Hawks and had a chance until Derrick Rose came back to haunt the Celtics one more time.
